The first ballpoint pen was invented in 1888. Every year since has brought innovation to the designs and the inks. A ballpoint pen is very portable, won't leak, and writes smoothly, due to the viscous oil-based ink. Many modern ballpoint pens feature lighter gel ink. Japanese pen manufacturers have innovated the ballpoint pen to allow super-fine writing and almost instant drying time.
